Surfing The Web
Not everyone knows how to surf the web. After all, in relative terms the internet has not been around for a very long time, meaning that some generations are completely alien in how to use it – particularly how to use it effectively and efficiently so that they can achieve certain goals. The internet can be used to achieve almost anything in the modern work, from doing the weekly shop to managing the bank account. You can even stay in touch with old friends and watch the latest streaming videos on various movie hosting websites.
But there is a lot to the web, making it very daunting to some. There are many kinds of stories we hear about such as viruses and Trojan horses that can infect computers (though these can be avoided with anti virus software). But there are many ways to avoid such problems and ensure that your surfing of the web is a pleasant and safe one. You have probably worked out that the way to get to a website is to type its URL into the browser. This is where www.idiotswebguide.co.uk would be placed. Then simply hitting enter or clicking the ‘go’ button brings you to the site of your choice.
But there’s so much more to this, with various different ways of getting to different websites. Websites will often contain links which will either take you to a different page of the website (ie, ‘home’, ‘about us’ or ‘contact’) or it will take you to a different website altogether (don’t worry, this is all clearly labelled).
You can also find what you are after by using a search engine such as ‘google’ or ‘yahoo!’. These can be found at www.google.com or www.yahoo.com and by typing in what you want to find and hitting the enter key (or clicking ‘search’) they will provide you with links to various websites they think fit this description.
However, beyond all of this, there is a lot of information on the web, so just how do we know if the information is genuine and will be giving us good advice? The answer to this is to use websites that you trust; maybe run by organisations you recognise or have a good reputation. Many websites will have information about themselves on their own site under the ‘about us’ section. You will then be able to find out how easy or difficult it would be for bad or unhelpful information ending up on the site.
The internet is a big place, but keeping your wits about you and taking your time can ensure a safe and fulfilling experience whilst surfing the web.
